Announcing the Winners of the Black History Month 2024 Essay Contest

In honor of Black Heritage Month, students from grades 6 to 12 in the Anglophone South School District were invited to participate in an essay and artwork contest, organized by PRUDE Inc. This initiative aimed to recognize and celebrate the contributions of local Black leaders in our community. With enthusiasm and creativity, students shared their admiration for these influential figures through essays and artwork.

Winners were given prizes at their respective schools by PRUDE Inc. staff led by Gary Flanagan, Diversity Education Program Coordinator. With excitement and pride, prizes were awarded to the deserving winners amidst applause and encouragement from teachers, students, and staff.

Congratulations to the winners:

1st Place: Araoluwa Odedeji from Saint John High School, who wrote an inspiring essay on “Kenneth Scott.”

 

2nd Place: Melody Ovuakporoyecha from St. Malachy’s High School, who shared insights on “William Onososen.”

3rd Place: Victoria Owolabi from Princess Elizabeth School, who highlighted “William Onososen” in her essay.

Congratulations to the winners for their outstanding achievements in honoring local Black leaders through their work!

We appreciate everyone who took part in the essay and artwork contest. All entries were amazing, showcasing not only talent but also a deep appreciation for the contributions of Black leaders in our community. Your participation has contributed to a greater understanding and celebration of Black heritage. Thank you for sharing your voices and perspectives.

A big thank you to Gary Flanagan, for his dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion through educational initiatives. Your efforts are truly appreciated.

We also extend our gratitude to the teachers who guided and supported these students, and to the families whose encouragement played a vital role in their success. Together, we celebrate the richness of Black heritage and the power of education to inspire positive change.
