Celebrating Black Heritage Month: A Night of Talent and Unity

On Friday, March 1st, PRUDE Inc. had the immense pleasure of culminating the Black Heritage Month celebration with a spectacular event at Kent Theatre with the Black Youth Talent Show. It was an evening filled with remarkable performances and heartfelt moments, bringing together a diverse community in celebration of black culture and talent.

The event was expertly moderated by Ogorchukwu Ugolo, coordinator of the Young Ambassadors Leadership Initiative (YALI) at PRUDE Inc., alongside Gare Ewubare, a YALI Ambassador, who co-hosted the evening’s festivities.

Kicking off the event, Amir Norouzi read the land acknowledgment, recognizing the Indigenous land on which we gathered. Jackson Enoh, PRUDE Inc.’s Executive Director, warmly welcomed everyone with his opening remarks, setting the tone for an evening of appreciation and unity.

The stage came alive with electrifying AfroBeats Dance performances by Aboom Nation, featuring Kenny Olukoya and Prince Salim Ngoga, captivating the audience with their infectious energy.

The musical journey continued with soul-stirring performances, including renditions of popular hits such as “Bigger” by Odogwu (Prinx Emmanuel), “Soso” and “Holy Ghost Fire” by Omah Lay, and “Yaba Buluku” by Burna Boy, showcasing the rich tapestry of African music and talent.

A highlight of the evening was the mesmerizing trumpet presentation of “Oh Canada” by Kaima Eruokwu, followed by powerful solo performances by Tomi Sadiku, who sang “Stand Up” by Cynthia Erivo, and Dami Taiwo Olukoya, who delivered a stirring rendition of a Lauren Daigle classic.

The ambiance was further elevated with a soulful saxophone presentation of “What a Wonderful World” by David Ugolo, captivating the audience with its melodic charm.

In reflection, Li Song, PRUDE Inc.’s former Managing Director, shared insights into PRUDE Inc.’s impact on the community, emphasizing the theme of Black Heritage Month. She gave a powerful message of empowerment and self-expression -“Try to be somebody, not anybody”.

Special guests, including Rufina Ajalie, PRUDE Inc. Board representative,  Mouhamed Idrissa Gueye, Youth Mentor, Jimi and Ade Alalade, Founders of the Naija Atlantic Bakery,  and representatives from the Asian Heritage community  Dahlia Das and Somaditya Das, added to the spirit of inclusivity and solidarity, underscoring the importance of coming together to honor and uplift each other’s cultures and heritage.

Christine Eruokwu, Newcomer Programs Manager at PRUDE Inc. and lead on the 2024 #BHM organizing committee, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees for their unwavering support and encouragement, emphasizing the importance of community and unity in celebrating diversity and excellence in all ramifications.

As we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the PRUDE Inc. staff, board, clients, guest speakers, volunteers, and community organizations who honored us with their presence at the event, we also wish to express special appreciation to Shane Cassidy of Kent Theatre, Bridget Ibukun, and Chidinma Oshiokenoya-Moses for their exceptional venue setup and catering services. This gathering serves as a poignant reminder that by coming together in celebration and acknowledgment, we not only honor the remarkable richness and diversity of our shared humanity but also strengthen our collective bonds. From enlightening Lunch & Learn sessions to engaging social media posts, each contribution was invaluable in making the event a resounding success.
