Maximizing Organizational Performance through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

DEI has since evolved from a social tolerance perspective to an increasing emphasis on the adequate representation of diverse groups, especially in ways that directly impact the workplace. For key decision-makers, fostering a healthy, collaborative, and more inclusive atmosphere seems quite challenging, and organizations are constantly seeking ways to maximize the potential of diverse teams in the workplace.

Studies show that organizations can improve their business performance by intentionally focusing on DEI. Besides creating an inclusive and collaborative culture, DEI practices have been shown to increase innovation and team collaboration, for example, gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to perform well, and ethnically diverse companies are 35% also more likely to do the same (Deloitte Australia, 2013; McKinsey & Company, 2020).

So, where can organizations start?

  • Acknowledge that your organization can perform better.
  • Nurture a supportive work environment that welcomes and encourages equal opportunities for all employees.
  • Recognize that diverse employees bring significant value as a result of their cultural, ethnic, and social differences.
  • Identify and remove potential/existing barriers to inclusion by embarking on an immediate review of your existing policies through a DEI lens.
  • Promote an organizational culture that fosters problem-solving initiatives in ways that can open up new access to an untapped customer base.
